Description

Oxandrolone is an oral anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone. It was designed to have a very strong separation of anabolic and androgenic effects and no significant estrogenic or progestagenic activity. Oxandrolone is known for being a fairly mild compound compared to other oral steroids. It has been designed to increase strength and quality muscle tissue gains without significant side effects. Milligram by milligram, it exhibits six times the anabolic activity of testosterone in assays with significantly less androgenicity. This drug is a favourite of dieting bodybuilders and competitive athletes in speed/anaerobic sports, where its tendency to increase net tissue (without fat or water retention) fits well with the desired goals. Oxandrolone has a modification on the number two carbon atom, whereby this second carbon is replaced with an oxygen atom, hence the ox prefix in the name Oxandrolone. This replacement of the carbon atom with an oxygen atom is also believed to significantly increase Oxandrolone’s anabolic abilities compared to its parent hormone dihydrotestosterone.

Side Effects

Because dihydrotestosterone is unable to interact with the aromatase enzyme and therefore cannot undergo aromatisation (conversion) to estrogen, Oxandrolone shares this important trait. Its inability to aromatise into estrogen results in the complete elimination of the possibility of any and all estrogenic and estrogen-related side effects. Oxandrolone is alkylated at the 17th carbon atom of its steroid structure (known as methylation or C17-alpha alkylation) to bypass liver metabolism and allow it to reach the bloodstream to do its job. Unfortunately, C17-alpha-alkylation of oral anabolic steroids is known to express varying degrees of toxicity to the liver, but Oxandrolone has demonstrated much less liver toxicity than most other C17-alpha-alkylated oral anabolic steroids.
